This August, Keith Skelton will lead a new photo workshop in his home state of Oregon. August and September is arguably the best time of year for weather in Oregon with chances of rain being minimal. We will see and photograph some of Portland’s numerous historic bridges that cross the Willamette River and photograph beautiful Astoria on the Oregon Coast.

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and is located 70 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Portland straddles the banks of the Willamette River which flows north through the city. Less than 10 miles from downtown, the Willamette meets the Columbia River, the fourth-largest river in the United States. The rivers define the city in history, beauty and character.

Each bridge we will see is unique in character. Many are drawbridges serving cars, trains and bicycles. See HERE and HERE for a list and photos. Time allowing, we will also photograph a sunrise of the beautiful skyline with Mount Hood in the distance. During the mid day we can also visit and discuss photography at a few of the great photo galleries in Portland including the well known Blue Sky.

Astoria is the most northernmost town on the Oregon Coast located near the mouth of the Columbia River where it empties into the Pacific Ocean. There are many things to photograph including the 4 mile long Astoria-Megler Bridge, a beautiful bridge that links Washington to Oregon. It crosses some of the roughest waters in the world where large cargo ships can been seen daily entering and leaving the Columbia.

Astoria itself, is a delight to photograph with numerous scenic views of the river and has a small town atmosphere. We also will visit nearby Fort Stevens which has many old bunkers and is rich with wildlife. It was originally built at the end of the Civil War and has many richly textured moss covered walls to photograph. Near Fort Stevens is the wreck of the Peter Iredale that ran ashore in 1906. A skeleton remains on the beach near the mouth of the Columbia River which makes for many photo opportunities. Tides allowing, we will try shooting a night sky incorporating the shipwreck.

SEE THE GALLERY for pictures of some of the places we will visit and photograph.

All levels of experience are welcome! Five openings remain! $689 not including transportation, lodging and food. Former students are eligible for a discount.
