My iPhone is better than your Canon 7D

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CAMERA?

"The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE." Ernst Haas
I've been using my iPhone a lot lately. I am shooting pictures everyday with it and I've never felt more creative. I call it "the camera that thinks it's a phone." It has freed me up from manipulating all of those settings such as P, A, S, M, AF, MF, AFC, WB, X, SCN, F, etc. Instead, I press two camera icons and presto! I get a picture that is certainly more convenient, more instantaneous and sometimes even better than any taken with a Canon 7D, Nikon D700, Sony, Leica, or Panasonic.

How can the iPhone be better the DSLR?
The iPhone excels because I can change any photo to black and white, crop it, add a groovy border, place a watermark on it and then email it or post it to any online service all in a matter of seconds. Can your brand new high-end camera with all of its bells and whistles do that?

Granted, the iPhone’s five megapixels has quality limitations and its zoom feature creates a pixilated haze, but there are hundreds of effects and manipulation tools that are either free or cost only a couple of bucks available at the Apple App Store. For better or worse, 2.5 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook every month. I bet a good portion of those were taken with the iPhone.

Camera manufacturers are getting worried that the iPhone is going to put the compact digital camera out of business. They should be worried. But they shouldn't fear that it’s going to replace a $3,000 Canon and bag of lenses…yet. The next iPhone 5 camera is rumored to be equipped with an 11 megapixel camera.

Most certainly, a DSLR's image quality is far superior than a iPhone. But it is hard to tell in a 600 pixel image.

Wikipedia’s definition of a camera is "a camera is a device that records/stores images. These images may be still photographs or moving images such as videos or movies." Hmmm, that sounds like my iPhone.

Most importantly, a camera is a tool that allows us to capture moments, express our feelings and create a work of art. Seeing is the criteria that makes the image dynamic—not the camera. The camera is only a tool for expression.

Promise me you won’t throw away your wonderful cameras yet. They are excellent tools for expressing vision. And, the truth is, it doesn’t really matter what tool you use. The important thing is to go out there and see.

Have you heard?

There was also a recent controversy when Damon Winter of The New York Times was awarded a third place in The Pictures of the Year. Why? He used a iPhone and an App.
