SLOT CANYONS, THE COLORADO PLATEAU AND THE VALLEY OF THE GODS

The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means "the place where water runs through rocks." Lower Antelope Canyon is know as Hazdistazí or "spiral rock arches." Formed mainly by flooding, the slot canyons are some of the most dynamic and visually challenging photographic subjects in the American Southwest.

The Valley of the Gods is a quarter the size of its famed neighbor, Monument Valley, but it has dozens of equally spectacular eerie sandstone sculptures and spires. They are  brilliant in color and variety. This is my favorite place to shoot partly because you're unlikely to see a single tourist bus here.

Monument Valley, is a vast, iconic desert on the Arizona-Utah border. Its plains are gorgeously interrupted by colossal sandstone monoliths, like bulky ships sailing an ocean of sand. It is one of the top photo destinations in the world because of its shear geological beauty and amazing light.

Horseshoe Bend or "King Bend" is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near Page, Arizona. It can be photographed at either sunrise or sunset and is easily accessed.

Natural Bridges is one of the finest examples of natural stone architecture in the southwest. On a tree-covered mesa next to deep sandstone canyons, three natural bridges formed when streams slowly cut through the canyon walls. This is a great mid day photo journey into the canyon below the massive bridges.

AFP uses specialist software to detect manipulated photos

AFP uses specialist software to detect manipulated photos

AFP has recently begun using forensic software to alert photo editors to manipulated images produced by third party sources and amateur witnesses.

AFP is the only global news agency to use Tungstene, high-technology image interpretation software which combs through the information contained in digital images to detect potential tampering. Using a suite of filters, it can identify tell-tale discrepancies in pixels and analyze harmonisation of light and colour. The Agency has set up a specialist unit within its photo department to trace edits and manipulations in suspect photos. If an editor expresses doubts about the veracity of a particular image, it is passed to the unit for analysis using the software. AFP has equipped its regional editorial centres in Washington, Paris and Hong Kong with the new software.

AFP is recognized for the excellence of its photojournalism and Tungstene is aimed at "preserving the authenticity of the work of its journalists," said Roger Cozien, a former criminology expert who created the software package. AFP used Tungstene to identify tampering on a recent photograph purportedly of a dead Osama bin Laden, an image broadcast in Pakistan and subsequently widely used around the world, before it was withdrawn as an obvious hoax.
