Master Photographer Series - Ernst Haas

Ernst Haas (1921-1986) is considered one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. I became familiar with his photographs I saw in Life Magazine long before I became a professional photographer.

Haas began as a photojournalist in Austria and later became a member of Magnum. But it was his innovative color photography that set him apart. His motion studies and rich Kodachrome color abstracts are as contemporary today as there were in the 1960s and 1970s.

His quotes are also some of the most relevant to the philosophy of "seeing" as an artist.

“I am not interested in shooting new things - I am interested to see things new.”

"The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE."

"A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it?"

One of Haas's most famous books is The Creation.

Winter Landscape Photo Workshop

Even though the weather was warm and not very winter like, we had a successful photo workshop on Saturday in the Tejon Pass, California.

There are still a few spots left for Street Photography Workshop in Los Angeles's Chinatown Feb. 20 during the Chinese New Year's parade. You can check it out here.

6X7 Film camera shoots 1000 frames per second.....

Not really! But in the last few days Fujifilm has announced two very unique and different cameras.

The first is a new FILM camera that looks similar to cameras manufactured 75 years ago. The GF670 uses 120/220 film and has a 80mm aperture priority lens. It will shoot 6X6 and 6X7 format. It is somewhat similar to a reasonably new Voigtlander Bessa 111.

The other fascinating camera by Fujifilm is the FinePix HS10 which boasts of a 30x, 24mm to 720mm f2.8-5.6 lens, 10MP, 1920x1080 HD video, RAW, and a high speed 1000 fps motion capture.

If only we could get the 24-720mm lens on the 6X7 with a full frame sensor. Now, that would be different!

Co Rentmeester and the Snow Monkey

In 1970, when I saw Co Rentmeester's photo in LIFE Magazine of the Japanese Snow Monkey, I knew I wanted to be a photographer. Somehow the incongruity of what I thought was a jungle animal in the snow was beyond belief.

I did became a photographer and I have traveled the world. But I still have not seen the Japanese Macaque Monkeys which are just seven hours from Tokyo.

Much to my chagrin I recently saw a post in THE FRAME from The Sacramento Bee that spoiled that sense of wonderment I felt as a 18 year old wannabe.

Somehow the hordes of tourists made me wonder if the mammals were going ape over all the high end digital cameras?
